As America’s #1 Mental Fitness Coach I’ve helped hundreds of smokers quit smoking using advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) or what I call Total Mind Therapy© in my San Diego office. Over the past 8 years I’ve found that no matter how committed a smoker is they may experience urges when they decide to stop smoking. I’ve also found that when a smoker has some alternatives to bringing a cigarette to their mouth they are much more likely to succeed.

The following are some stop smoking methods you can use to handle the urge. You may use one, all, or a combination of the following methods to achieve your goal to stop smoking permanently.

The Urge to Smoke Will Pass

The urge to smoke is immediate. Although it can feel almost overwhelming, keep in mind that it usually lasts for five minutes or less. If you can resist for that period of time, you are one step closer to achieving your goal to stop smoking and live a long healthy and happy life.

8 Methods You Can Use to Handle the Urge to Smoke

1) Bring your hand to your mouth as if you were smoking a cigarette. Take a deep breath, hold it for a few seconds, and exhale as if you had just taken your first puff on a cigarette. Part of the feeling you get from smoking is a direct result of taking in a deep breath. A deep breath allows you to take in a maximum amount of oxygen, and exhaling lets out large quantities of carbon dioxide. This results in a feeling of relaxation.

2) Take a sip of water there or four times during this five minute period. It can help reduce your need to smoke. It also gives you something to do with your hands. The extra water helps to flush the nicotine out of your body.

3) Put something in your mouth that has no calories. Things such as a stir stick, a toothpick, or another substitute for a cigarette.

4) Nibble on small pieces of carrots or celery. These are especially helpful in the car.

5) Do something, anything, to keep you busy for the next five minutes. This will help you get your mind off the cigarettes.

6) Chew a piece of gum or a piece of hard candy. Life Savers work well.

7) Get up! Move around for five minutes. It will help make the urge to smoke pass.

Remember the reasons you want to quit and think about them!

Remember, the urge to smoke is temporary but the effects of smoking lst a life time. Decide to stop smoking now. Do it for life!

As America’s #1 Mental Fitness Coach I’ve helped hundreds of smokers quit smoking using advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) or what I call Total Mind Therapy © over the years in my San Diego office. One complaint every smoker talks about is their nicotine withdrawal symptoms that result from their nicotine addiction.

The key to overcoming nicotine addiction is to focus on what you want, to become an ex-smoker. When you first quit smoking this can be difficult, because it is so easy to focus on what you don’t want, which is smoking. This is where your emotional brain won’t let you stop. That’s why advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) are so effective in helping you with your psychological addiction; it can help you focus on what you do want.

What You Can Expect During Withdrawal

As much as you have to look forward to when you stop smoking, the road to success can be filled with potholes, bumps and blocks. Without diminishing your enthusiasm for quitting, you have to be realistic that for the majority of people this isn’t as simple as saying “I quit”.

Nicotine Withdrawal

You may go through nicotine withdrawal, which is perhaps the worst part of your journey to becoming smoke-free. Over the years that you smoked, your body chemistry adjusted to the nicotine input. Some people find that their system is literally addicted to the nicotine and won’t give it up without a fight. That’s where your reasons to quit and your commitment come in handy.

Withdrawal is Both a Physical and Emotional Process

Your body is going to have to re-adjust to its highly reduced nicotine level. After you stop smoking you’re going to notice the signals it gives as it tries to talk you in to meeting its usual demand. At the same time, you have to make an emotional adjustment so that you don’t rely on smoking as a coping mechanism for the triggers that set your smoking habit off.

Nicotine Withdrawal Symptoms

The most common nicotine withdrawal symptoms that you can experience when you stop smoking include irritability, anxiety, headaches, inability to concentrate, increased hunger and of course – a seemingly overwhelming craving for nicotine.

If you ever tried to quit by changing from regular to reduced nicotine cigarettes, you may have felt some of these withdrawal symptoms. You need to keep in mind that to stop smoking is to battle your body to regain control over what nicotine has captured from you.

The Nicotine Delivery System

As you inhale the cigarette smoke, nicotine rushes to your lungs, where it’s rapidly absorbed. From there, nicotine goes to your heart, liver, spleen and brain. Nicotine is so invasive that it’s easily detected in breast milk and even in the umbilical cord blood of a newborn baby.

That’s why smoking while pregnant is so dangerous to the health of an unborn child. Nicotine can be tough for the body to get rid of. Even after you stop smoking it stays in your body for up to three days.

Your Nicotine Addiction

With each cigarette you smoked, your body built up a higher tolerance for this toxic substance. Brain-based studies show that the amount of smoking increases as the smoker tries to get the same level of satisfaction they used to get with lower levels of nicotine.

The reason this happens is because nicotine stimulated your mesolimbic system, which is what kicks up your intense cravings. The mesolimbic pathway is one of the dopaminergic pathways in your brain. In other words, it provides natural narcotics to your brain. Over time, it takes more and more nicotine for your brain to signal the same pleasure reaction.

But at the same time, the lungs, heart and liver are getting slammed with the harmful impact of nicotine. As with any lifestyle change, the first few days are going to be hard, so for most people it’s a good idea not to start this on Monday morning when you have a busy week at work or school to contend with.

The Best Way to Handle Nicotine Withdrawal

If possible, take a day off on Friday and start that morning. Then you have three uninterrupted days to be cranky and obnoxious while at the same time subjecting fewer people to it. That’s because if you do this completely cold turkey there’s a very good chance you may be a bit grumpy during this time.

Also, you can clear your smoking stuff such as ashtrays, lighters and cigarettes out of the house. Also try not to be around the same smoking cues that you have at work or in social settings.

Talk to Your Friends and Family about Your Decision to Stop Smoking

Once you have made the decision to quit and have picked the date let your friends and family know so that you can get their support. Make sure you talk to those you love and let them know what you’re doing so that they can provide a support system if you need to vent. Tell them you need their encouragement, especially if you become irritable, or even slightly irrational as a side effect. Let them know need their patience and understanding.

For nearly a decade now I’ve been helping smokers quit smoking using advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) or what I call Total Mind Therapy© in my San Diego office. One reason especially women smokers tell me they want to stop smoking is because of the way smoking effects the skin. While glowing, healthy, wrinkle free skin is something that everyone wants to have it’s another thing smoking robs you of.

How does Your Skin Get It’s Healthy Glow?

Your skin is your body’s biggest organ. Healthy skin originates from within your body. The food that you eat gets broken into simpler substances and nutrients. These nutrients go into your bloodstream and get mixed with oxygen. This mix gets transported throughout your body through thousands of blood veins, vessels and capillaries. Nutrients are then absorbed by your skin giving it a healthy, glowing appearance.

How Smoking Effects Your Skin

When it comes right down to it, your internal health and your external beauty are two sides of the same coin. You get oxygen naturally through breathing but smoking results in inhaling harmful carbon monoxide. The carbon monoxide mixes with the hemoglobin present in your blood. Your blood cells absorb carbon monoxide gas much faster than oxygen. This means that carbon monoxide takes the place of most of the oxygen your skin cells need to have a healthy life.

It’s Not Just the Carbon Monoxide

Cigarettes not only contain carbon monoxide but also contain poisonous gases like ammonia, butane, nicotine, carbolic acid, formic aldehyde, prussic acid, pyridine, parvoline, arsenic and cadmium, just to name a few. All of these cause damage to all your body’s cells.

How Smoking Effects Your Skin’s Repair System

Your skin has its own repair system. Smoking destroys this system causing premature aging. At this stage your skin loses its natural glow and develops a pale, sickly look.

Smoking and Vitamin C

Smoking deprives your skin of vitamin C. This essential vitamin is unstable and is not produced by your body. Vitamin C helps your skin in generating new healthy cells giving it a youthful look. The outcome of this lack of vitamin C on your skin is that it can cause the breakdown of collagen and results in wrinkles.

Dark Circles

Chain smokers often have sunken eyes and dark circles under them. This is because smoking damages the skin cells making your skin scaly. This also causes wrinkles. Smoking also shows its effect around your lips and mouth, making them appear creased and robbing them of their natural appearance.

Do Something Good for Your Skin – Stop Smoking!

You probably spend a lot of money on cigarettes and tobacco. What do they give you in return? Nothing but wrinkles, dry skin, diseases and nasty side effects. Isn’t it time you quit smoking? Do it for life!

As America’s #1 Mental fitness Coach I’ve helped hundreds of smokers quit smoking using advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) or what I call Total Mind Therapy© in my San Diego office. When smokers talk to me about quitting, they often mention that they’re waiting for the “right time” to stop smoking. They were thinking about quitting but they have a project, a special event, a trip or whatever and they can’t quit smoking because of it.

The Best Time to Stop Smoking is NOW!

No matter the reason you think you can’t stop, right this minute, today, is the best time to quit smoking. There is never going to be a better time to stop smoking than right now!

Reasons to Quit Smoking

There are so many good reasons to stop smoking. Smoking damages your body many ways. It affects your heart, your lungs, your brain and it affects you all the way down to your cells. Also smoking jacks up your blood pressure, reduces your circulation and makes your skin look old and leathery.

If that wasn’t enough, the odor of cigarette smoke settles on your skin making you smell bad to non-smokers. Also, if you smoke inside, it lingers on your clothes, your bedding and over everything else in your home.

Choosing a Day to Quit Smoking

There are many anti-smoking advocates who will tell you to choose a day to quit. They talk about picking a day when you don’t have any stress going on or a time when you’re not in the middle of some kind of upheaval.

The reason these anti-smoking advocates give this advice is because withdrawing from nicotine can be hard and battling against an addictive substance is exacerbated during times of stress. But, if you take a realistic look at your life and the lives of everyone else you know, you’ll realize that there’s no such thing as a great time to quit smoking because a stress free life doesn’t exist.

There is Always Going to Be Stress in Your Life

I don’t care if you’re on a vacation on a beach somewhere, there will always be little things cropping up to stress you out. This is especially true at work and at home. There will always be irritations.

Don’t Wait for the Lights All to Be Green

What would happen if you waited until all the lights were green before you headed off to work? You’d never get to work! The same goes for waiting to stop smoking until all conditions are right. You’ll never stop smoking!

What Happens After You Quit Smoking?

Think about this; what do you think will happen the minute something goes on to stress you out if you wait until everything is going smoothly before you quit smoking? You’ll want to reach for the cigarette and the temptation will be a lot stronger if everything has been running along in a relative ease until that moment.

Quit smoking Now No Matter What’s Going on Around You

Make a decision to quit smoking today regardless of whatever emotions you’re struggling with. You don’t want to feed your emotions to an addictive substance because it won’t change anything anyway. The only thing quitting will do is positively affect your health.

What Time of Day Should I Quit?

Some people find the best time to stop smoking is at the start of the day. Others find the best time to stop is at night. Just choose whichever one you think will help you stay on track with your decision.

Get Help!

Get support when you quit smoking. Tell others about your decision. Enlist the aid of your family and friends.

Be Careful

When you make the decision to stop smoking you need to understand that a friend of yours who still smokes might end up subtly trying to sabotage your efforts. Just remember to say “no” to anyone who offers you a smoke.

There is No Failure

In Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP we understand there is no failure, only feedback. Understand that you might make mistakes. You might give in to the craving – but if you do and smoke a cigarette, don’t blow off the entire day. Instead of thinking, “Well, I already blew it today – I might as well go ahead and smoke the rest of the day!” Just start again right from where you are and finish out the day strong.

Remember, quitting will be the best thing you’ll ever do for your health. Stop smoking today!

While nicotine can be a factor in that people can’t stop smoking, it’s not the real reason people can’t stop smoking. It has more to do with your psychological addiction. Since smokers believe that smoking is “as additive as heroin” I regularly have to explain the actual effects of nicotine to my clients who want to quit smoking using advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). Here’s what I tell them when they come to see me in mySan Diego office.

How does the Nicotine in Cigarettes Affect Your Body?

As you take a puff off a cigarette nicotine affects your brain and mood within 10 seconds. You may have a feeling of being more alert and calm. You feel ‘good”. This feeling is also known as an addiction.

Nicotine Addiction

You can experience the effects of nicotine even if you only smoke a few cigarettes a day. Of course the more that you smoke, the more your body gets used to it and your higher level of chemical dependency. Even light smokers can become addicted to cigarettes because of nicotine’s impact on your mind and body. Nicotine can even affect your moods and feelings in certain situations.

Nicotine and Your Nervous System

Within seconds after your first puff nicotine travels into your bloodstream and starts to affect your central nervous system as well as the rest of your body. Since nicotine is a stimulant, it can help you think more clearly, at least temporarily. The pleasure centers of your brain are also stimulated which can make it appear as if you feel more relaxed and less anxious. Of course you are not actually more relaxed because nicotine is a stimulant not a depressant.

The Reason Nicotine Makes You Feel the Way You Do

The reason that nicotine affects you the way it does is because it also affects the hormones produced by your body. It’s in the creation of these hormones that creates your chemical dependency on nicotine and the accompanying cravings you get. The more you smoke the more hormones are produced and heavy smokers become dependent on that heightened levels of hormones that was stimulated by nicotine. This is what causes your nicotine addiction.

You come to need a cigarette at certain intervals of time. After the stimulation of your hormones begins to fall, you find yourself needing another cigarette to bring you back into your comfort zone. If you do not get that cigarette, your craving begins. That’s called an addiction.

The Dangers of Smokers Cough

Over the years I’ve helped hundreds of smokers quit smoking using advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) in my San Diego office. One of the common complaints smokers tell me is they have a “smokers cough”.

It’s Not Just Annoying – It’s Frightening

A smoker’s cough is more than an annoyance; it can be telling you how much smoking is actually affecting your respiratory system. If you are suffering from what appears to be side effects of a common cold, this could have more to do with your smoking than any bacterial or viral infections.

The “Smoker’s Cough”

The “smokers cough” affects most smokers who have been smoking for a long time. The problem is that it takes a lot of cigarettes for these irritants to build up and cause this type of cough.

Why Do We Cough?

Most people cough to expel something in their throat or lungs. When you cough, the movement clears your airway of the offending substance.

There are tiny hair-like projections called cilia in you trachea and nasal passages. Cilia are found in other places in your body. Wherever they’re found their job is the same – move foreign irritating substances out of your body. The problem with smoking is that it damages these cilia and stops them from moving.

Mucus

Your body wants to get rid of irritants in your throat and lungs so it produces mucus. In your lungs, it is referred to as phlegm. When your cilia are not working properly, you need more mucus. When you cough this mucus is moved around. It travels up your throat and down your esophagus so your lungs can breathe. It sounds disgusting, but that is the only way that your lungs can free themselves.

Why Smokers Cough So Much in the Morning

When you are awake, periodic coughing moves those irritants from cigarette smoking out of your lungs. But when you sleep, these irritants build up. This is why smokers cough so much when they first get up in the morning. Your coughing will go on until your lungs are completely clear and can go for some time. This is that hacking cough that’s associated with smokers.

The Real Problem With Smoker’s Cough

The real problem with smoker’s cough is that it has other severe health implications. A long term affect of smoking is that your damaged cilia can’t remove cigarette chemicals from your lungs. They also can’t move other problem substances from them either. These are things like pollutants, allergens, bacteria and even viruses that can get in and cause you all sorts of respiratory distress. All because the body won’t have an easy time getting rid of them.

How to Get Rid of Smokers Cough

Although smokers might like a different answer, the only real treatment for a smoker’s cough is to, well, quit smoking. As long as you smoke and suck those offending substances continue into your lungs, they will continue to affect the movement of your cilia and ultimately your respiratory system. After you stop smoking your lungs will begin to clear and your cough will slowly go away.

For over 8 years now I’ve been using advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) or what I call Total Mind Therapy© to help smokers quit smoking. While I do have a very good success rate, I don’t help everyone who comes to me actually stop smoking. When smokers come to see me in my in my San Diego office I have to tell them that even hypnosis and NLP can’t make you quit smoking. You have to want to quit smoking. You have the right mindset for these therapies to work. Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to interview hundreds of smokers. I’d like to give you the some of the reasons I’ve heard why smokers “can’t quit”.

Why Smokers Can’t Quit

Smokers tell me that the reason they smoke is that they feel that smoking frees them from feelings of unhappiness, stress, boredom, anxiousness and loneliness. They have come to believe that if they quit smoking their life would be less enjoyable that, in fact, a life without cigarettes would lead to misery, complete boredom and total frustration. But when you think about it is this really true?

I’ll Gain Weight

Another reason many smokers give for not quitting is they believe that they will gain weight after they quit smoking. While it is true that almost all smokers will gain a little water weight, you won’t necessarily gain a lot of weight. You can counteract this urge to eat a number of ways and if a client mentions this I always address it their session.

I Work Better when I Smoke

Some smokers believe that they can work faster and better after puffing on a cigarette. But is this really true? When you actually think about it do cigarettes help or do they only get in the way of what you are doing?

What Will My (Smoking) Friends Think?

When smokers fail to quit they often tell me that it wasn’t the cravings for nicotine that made it difficult to quit. It was the lack in social contact. For them cigarettes were used to break the ice when at parties or outside an drinking establishment. You can offer or ask to light one up. It’s a good conversation starter. As a result smokers often have the belief that smoking makes them more sociable. But when you think about it, more and more people today believe that smoking is unacceptable. Do you really think that smoking makes you more sociable?

Other Reasons People Smoke

Some people tell me that they smoke as a way to celebrate special occasions such as a promotion, the birth of a child or a new job. They feel that everything loses its charm without smoking. As a result smokers are often unable to enjoy social gatherings, fun, games, or the company of others without smoking. But since the majority of people don’t smoke does this really ring true?

Developing the Ex-Smoker Mindset

First I want to say that I know that many people who don’t smoke or who have never smoked just can’t understand why people smoke cigarettes in the first place. Ex-smokers on the other hand are well aware of the way that smoking used to make them feel. The key is they choose not to smoke because they understand the many drawback of smoking along with all the pain and misery it brings.

If a smoker quits cold turkey it’s very likely they suffered through nicotine withdrawal symptoms. They had to change some of their activities that triggered them to smoke. They had to break old familiar habits.

Quitting cold turkey meant they fought not only with the physical withdrawal symptoms but also with the psychological withdrawal. What is key here is that even though the odds of them getting over the psychological addiction and quitting were small – about 7 percent – they still managed to let go of cigarettes and quit smoking.

What Does it Take to Finally Quit Smoking?

While smokers who stop smoking convince themselves fully about the dangers and consequences of smoking they know it’s more than that. They make a decision to stop smoking. They believe they can quit and maintain a positive mindset. I have to tell you that no matter what method they use to quit, I admire smokers who beat their addiction and stop smoking.

What to Expect When You Stop Smoking

When you first stop smoking it can be difficult. This is especially true if you continue focusing on what you don’t want, which is smoking. That’s why using advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is so effective in helping you with your psychological addiction. These mind shifting therapies can help you focus on what you do want, in this case being free of cigarettes and tobacco.

While you might find yourself feeling grumpy and insecure when you first begin on your stop smoking journey, the thing to remember is you can quit. Remember that thousands of others have quit smoking. They are living proof that you can stop smoking successfully. This means that it is possible to live without tobacco and cigarettes.

Why is it So Hard to Stop Smoking Permanently?

Most people who come for help to stop smoking have often quit smoking several times before. Some of these even come a few years after the use of hypnosis.

The problem is they started up again. They thought they could have “just one”. They had a weak moment, with old friends that smoke or had a bad situation. They forgot why they quit smoking, the consequences of smoking and the pain and agony they went through to stop. They forget all the reasons they decide to stop smoking and, as a result, it they became unable to resist the urge to pick up a cigarette. They fooled themselves into thinking they could be an occasional smoker. They thought that they wouldn’t pick up their old habit again. Don’t fall into this trap.

They problem is you can’t smoke just one. One is followed by another and then another. You have to make a decision to stop smoking, to never to smoke again. You have to remain committed to lifetime smoking cessation. If you get the urge to smoke then remind yourself of all of the reasons you decided to stop smoking in the first place. Never let one of those cancer causing sticks reach your lips again.

You Can Stop Smoking

After a few days of being out from under the dangerous grip of smoking you will start to understand you were living in a world of delusion. You had convinced yourself that you could not stop smoking but this simply wasn’t true. This is when smoking will be a thing of the past to you. Once this happens you will live a life that is healthier, happier and disease free. You will have developed the mindset of an ex-smoker and you will never pick up the habit again.

As America’s #1 Mental Fitness Coach© one of the parts of my practice that gives me the most pleasure is helping smokers stop smoking permanently using the combined power of advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) or what I call Total Mind Therapy©. When smokers come in to my office in beautifulSan Diego,CA I often ask them why it took so long for them to make the decision to finally quit smoking. Usually tell me it’s because of the side effects they have experienced as they tried to quit.

You Need to Make a Decision to Quit Smoking

In order to stop smoking you need to make a decision. As you probably already know, any time you make a decision to do something healthy for your body, you’re going to face trials. For example, if you haven’t worked out for a while, when you begin to work out you go through the trials that come from changing your schedule and having a sore body. These are the types of trials that can make you want to give up.

The same goes when you make the decision to quit smoking. You’ll find that when you stop smoking some of these trials will be mild and some a little bit tougher. What you need to keep in mind is you can do it – you can win in your battle to quit smoking but only if you don’t give up.

The Truth about Smoking Addiction and Cessation

As with stopping any addiction, there are going to be side effects that you will experience, but if you arm yourself with knowledge before you stop smoking, you’ll know what to expect and how to overcome it.

Now you might have heard that smoking cessation is worse than withdrawing from heroin. This simply isn’t true. The most common withdrawal symptoms are irritability, anxiety, headaches, inability to concentrate, increased hunger and, of course, a seemingly overwhelming craving for nicotine.

On the other hand a heroin addict experiences, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, convulsions, tremors, panic, muscle cramps, shallow breathing, an increased heart rate, an elevated temperature and a sharp elevation in blood pressure, just to name a few. While smoking cessation can make you feel uncomfortable, the truth is that no matter who you are, there is no comparison between the addiction to nicotine and the addiction to heroin.

You Can Stop Smoking with the Help of A Healthy Diet and exercise Plan

Many smokers, especially women, fear that when they stop smoking they will gain weight. While you may gain some weight, this is not a fact set in stone fact and you can quickly remedy it.

The reason most people who quit smoking gain weight is because smoking can help to keep your appetite at bay. Part of this is simply because it makes food smell and taste bad. The reason it affects many people is, since smoking is a habit stored in the emotional brain, many people simply exchange one emotional habit for another. In other words they replace their smoking habit with a eating habit.

An easy way to counteract this is by starting a healthier food plan. Choose foods that are healthy and that will help you feel good. Also get started on an activity that you enjoy, but that can double as exercise. By replacing your smoking habit with a healthy eating and exercise habit you’re killing two birds with one stone, getting rid of a habit that’s killing you while replacing it with one that will keep you alive a lot longer. Another thing you can do if you’re worried about gaining weight is to enlist the help of friends, your doctor or a professional dietitian.

How to Handle the Irritability When You Quit Smoking

Another side effect many people experience when they quit smoking is irritability. This irritability is a side effect of the craving you’ve built up for nicotine. What you need to remember is that within a few days it will go away. Stay focused on that. In the meantime, you can deal with your irritability by going for a short walk.

If you’re at work, take a break and just walk around the building. Use relaxation therapies, like self hypnosis recordings or meditation techniques. If the irritation becomes absolutely unbearable, then you might consider the patch or chewing nicotine gum. Although they are not that successful at helping most people quit, some people find that these can help to lessen the feelings of irritability.

How to Handle the Anxiety That Can Come When Quit Smoking

You might also notice some anxiousness. These are emotional swings are all caused by nicotine withdrawal. Again, what you need to remember is they will go further and further away as you abstain from your smoking habit. It’s easier to deal with these emotions if you’re getting support from your friends and family or someone who has already been successful with it.

Keep Your Hands Busy

You might experience feelings boredom because you have nothing to do with your hands. The easiest way to combat this is by squeezing a squeeze ball or taking up a new hobby that uses your hands.

How to Handle Sleeplessness When You Stop Smoking

Some people experience sleeplessness when they quit smoking. If this is you remember that this is just another side effect caused by nicotine withdrawal.

To counteract your sleeplessness don’t go to bed until you’re completely tired. Try to avoid caffeine. Take a nice, hot bath. Not only will this relax you it will also help you sweat out the effects smoking has had on your body.

Start Using these Methods to Stop Smoking Today

In biggest thing you need to do to stop smoking is just that – stop smoking! Make your decision to quit smoking today! Keep in mind that all of side effects and emotions you’ll experience as you quit smoking will not last. You will get through it if you hang in there.

As America’s Mental Fitness Coach© one of the things I regularly help my clients with is their smoking habit. Using advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) I help people that come into my San Diego quit smoking permanently. Because of this I am always on the alert for information about smoking and I recently cam across news about teenage smoking that really bothered me.

The Teenage Smoking Epidemic

In a recent U.S. Surgeon General’s report on youth smoking they found that one in five American teens’ smokes. About 600,000 middle school students and 3 million high school students light up regularly. More disturbing was the finding that 80 percent of them will still be addicted as adults. Although teen smoking was in dramatic decline a decade ago in recent years the drop off has decreased.

While there could be many reasons for this, anti-smoking activists blame the $10 billion that tobacco companies spend every year on advertising. According to an interview of Surgeon General Regina Benjamin in an article in USA Today, teen smoking is “a pediatric epidemic.” She went on to say, “The numbers are really shocking.”

The Problems with Teenage Smoking

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. today killing some 1,200 people per day. Even though every teenager seems to understand this, for every death caused by smoking, two more young people take up the habit. In addition to increasing a teenager’s odds of developing cancer and heart disease, smoking can permanently damage their still-developing lungs. In the interview Benjamin went on to say, “The addictive power of nicotine makes tobacco use much more than a passing phase for most teens. It’s a problem we have to solve.”

Of the diseases the Surgeon General refers the most common associated with smoking are lung cancer and throat cancer. Those who smoke are also likely to develop emphysema, COPD and other respiratory problems.

And, teens also get sick from smoking. It is not just adults who suffer these effects. In the prime of their lives they don’t want to be permanently attached to an oxygen tank or have an operation to remove their tongue or voice box.

Why Do Teenagers Smoke?

With all the information about smoking related diseases why do teenagers start to smoke anyway? Remember when you were a teenager? If you smoked you started because you wanted to fit in and feel cool. It’s not any different today. Peer pressure is the number one reason teenagers do all types of risky behavior. When your teen is with their friends and they smoke, they will ultimately offer a smoke to your teen. Too much ribbing and teasing can lead to your teen into trying it “once.” Little do they know that nicotine can be addictive and that one cigarette can turn into a pack a day habit.

Smoking also makes teens feel “grown up.” When a teenager is feeling a lack of attention at home or at school, smoking makes them feel like they are important. They gain a sense of confidence from that cigarette in their mouth.

Tobacco Advertising and Teenage Smoking

In the 60s and 70s the appeal to young men was the Marlboro Man ads. Smoking was synonymous with sex appeal and manliness. If you weren’t the Marlboro Man then you were a woman who wanted one. Also there were the “You’ve Come a Long Way Baby” Virginia Slims ads to pull in the young women. Advertising was directly pointed at the group of people the tobacco companies wanted to reel in – teenagers.

Some kids these days still feel that smoking gives them that allure. Girls love a dangerous guy who lives on the fringes of society because he is different. Smoking makes him look cool and handsome at the same time. For girls, smoking is what the “bad girls” do. This is a draw for teens with low self-esteem who want to boost their self image.

What You Can Do to Help Your Teenager Never Smoke (or Quit Smoking)

Before you try to convince your teenager that smoking is bad for them if you smoke you have to set a good example and quit. Yes this can be difficult but it is not impossible and believe it or not, your teenager will take notice when you quit smoking.

When you quit be sure to tell them that you are quitting for a number of reasons but one of the biggest reasons is that you love them and want to be a good example for them. Although it might appear as though your teenager doesn’t care, setting an example like this can be a big step in helping your teenager stay away from cigarettes or quit if they’ve already started smoking.

You also need to remember that you can’t convince anyone to do anything, especially teenagers. But you can help your teenagers by giving them information about the physical and social consequences of smoking. Although your teenager may be listening more to the social consequences of not smoking from their friends right now than the physical consequences of smoking in the future, it’s important to tie in the future social as well as physical consequences smoking might have. In addition to dying a dreadful death these also include things like you can’t smoke in most public places, that many people are offended by smoke (especially those of the opposite sex) and that employers are actually screening smokers out of some companies because of the increase on their health insurance premiums. Let them know that there is more to smoking than what they see on the surface.

If you have a friend or family member that has had their health affected by smoking or second hand smoke, take your teenager to visit them. It is always more of a deterrent to smoking when someone your teen knows has cancer or another disease that is directly related to it.

You Don’t Have to Let Your Child Become a Victim of Smoking

Your child doesn’t have to become a victim of tobacco company advertisements. Let your teenager know that you think they are already awesome. Bring them to people who have had their lives impacted by diseases caused by smoking. Share information with them about what cigarette smoke can do and the benefits of not smoking in a caring manner. You can make a difference. Together we can bend this trend!.

I’ve helped hundreds of people quit smoking over the years using advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), sometimes in my San Diego office and sometimes over the phone. When I ask my clients the reason they want to quit smoking very often they tell me it’s because they want to save money. Although it might be hard for some people to believe, sometimes saving money is a more important issue than health, at least for some clients. In this article you’ll find out why.

Just Think of How Much Money You’ll Save if You Quit Smoking

Most people know that if they would quit smoking they could save hundreds if not thousand dollars a year. Just think about this… If you only smoke two $5.00 packs of cigarettes a week for a year, you’ll spend $520.00 on smoking.

In one year of smoking two packs a week you could have bought…

A laptop computer…

A 32 inch flat screen LCD HD TV…

Six months of cable service for that TV…

10 haircuts by a Top Stylist…

A Round-Trip ticket to Hawaii…

And that’s just two packs a week or a half a pack a day!

The Cost of Smoking is Extreme!

The facts are that the cost of smoking cigarettes is extreme. Smoking is just plain expensive! As you can see, the cost of smoking can have a direct impact on the things you can buy and your lifestyle. That’s because, over time the cost of smoking can substantially subtract from the amount of money you can contribute to the living expenses in your household.

The Spiraling Cost of Smoking

The cost of smoking is even worse when you smoke a pack or more per day. Because of the addictive nature of nicotine, although most smokers start out smoking relatively few cigarettes per day, as they continue to smoke they become more and more hooked and the number of cigarettes they need to smoke each day to feel the same type of mood enhancement increases. Of course because they are smoking more cigarettes the cost of their habit increases. This can continue to spiral upward until they are paying $10 to $15 dollars a day or it can stop if they make the decision to quit smoking.

Calculating the Cost of Smoking

Let’s do some simple math. Right now, let’s figure out how much money you spend on smoking cigarettes. The cost of smoking comes down to some very simple calculations.

First, write down how many packs per day you smoke:

If it’s a quarter of a pack write down .25

A half a pack, write down .5

A whole pack = 1

Two packs = 2…

…etc.

Next calculate your packs per week:

Multiply the number of packs you smoke per day by 7

For example: If you smoke 1 pack a day

1 pack x 7 days = 7 packs/week

Next calculate your weekly cost:

Multiply the packs per week by your cost per pack

For example: Using the above example of a pack a day.

This equals 7 packs a week.

You spend $5 on each pack

You multiply 7 packs/week x $5 = $35 week

So if you smoke seven packs per week you’re spending $35 a week on cigarettes.

Now to calculate the amount you spend per year:

Multiply your weekly cost by 52.

So for our example this is how it would look:

$35 week x 52 weeks/year = $1,820 year

If you smoke a pack a day you’re spending $1,820 a year on cigarettes.

How Much do Those Cigarettes Really Cost You?

In 10 years (not including interest) smoking a pack a day equals $18,200. At a mere 6% interest rate at the end of 10 years this would be $24,854. Now let me ask you an obvious question, wouldn’t you rather quit smoking and do something extravagant with $24,854 in ten years than have all the health complications you could get from your smoking habit? Your obvious answer is yes, I know because you’re still reading this. And remember, this is only for one pack a day.

If you smoke two packs, simply double that number to $36,400. When you add in the interest, (about $12,000) that equals $48,400. You can buy a really nice car for $48,400. One other thing to remember is that this number is going to continue to rise as the government adds more “sin taxes” to your smoking habit.

How Much Would You Have If You Quit Smoking?

If you were to quit smoking a pack a day today and put only the money you’re using toward cigarettes into a 401(k) that earns you a safe 9% interest, then you’d have over $250,000 or a quarter of a million dollars within the next 30 years.

The Other Costs of Not Quitting

If you don’t quit smoking, then you’ll also end up paying other costs associated with your habit. For instance, as any dentist will tell you, smokers have bigger dental bills. That’s because smoking causes your teeth and gums to decay. Smokers need to have their clothes dry cleaned more often just to get the yellow smoke stains and odors out.

You life insurance will cost you more if you smoke. So does your health insurance. This is because insurers are very aware of the impact smoking has on the cost of insurance and are making smokers pay for that increase. This will probably continue to rise as insurance companies try to reel in costs.

Do you need to sell your car? If you’ve been smoking in it, you won’t get as much for your trade-in as you would if you hadn’t smoked in it. Plus, recent studies have shown that smokers earn less and in today’s workplace, probably because the smoking habit makes them seemingly less desirable employees. As more companies assume a no-smoking policy smokers are at actually at risk of becoming unemployable.

The Bottom Line

These calculations of the cost of smoking don’t even factor in the healthcare costs associated with smoking that you’ll probably encounter. Who can put a price on the cost of heart disease, lung cancer, cancer of the mouth and larynx, emphysema and the rest of those smoking related diseases? When you consider these costs, the cost of not quitting is enormous.

Here’s the bottom line. You want to quit smoking for your health, but you may also want to quit smoking to reduce your financial waste. Stop smoking and put the money you save to use toward your lifelong dreams. No matter how you do it, look for a way to quit smoking that will work for you and start on it today! You and your future are worth it!
